The much-awaited upcoming indie games Stray and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals are proof that indie titles are just as popular as AAA games. Many gamers put indie titles in high regard as they are more likely to be placed at a lower price point, have original and inventive art, characters, and narratives, as well as feature interesting and innovative gameplay.
That said, there are some indie games that have been overhyped by their fans. Some gamers took to Reddit to dish out which indie games they consider to be overrated.
10 Don’t Starve
In the sandbox game Don’t Starve, gamers play as the scientist Wilson, who finds himself in a peculiar world after encountering a demon. In order to make his way back home, Wilson must explore his environment, gather supplies, and keep himself safe from the mysterious lands’ strange creatures.
The indie game has been well-received by critics for its dynamic survival gameplay, Tim Burton-inspired outwork, and punishing difficulty. Reddit user HelmetStayedOn had a different opinion though, as they thought the indie game was “slow” and “tedious”.
Undertale gets a lot of recognition for being an innovative RPG that has a nuanced and exciting combat system. In addition, a lot of gamers also think that Undertale is an impressive feat because it was only developed by one person.
In the game, players need to explore and get out of the Underground, which is home to various dangerous monsters. While critics praised the game for being an engrossing RPG with unique characters, Redditor probywan1337 goes against the grain and exclaims that Undertale’s writing “isn’t that good”.
8 Five Nights At Freddy’s
Not a lot of people know that Five Nights at Freddy’s is an indie title. Inspiring multiple fan games and novels, Five Nights at Freddy’s was created and published by game developer Scott Cawthon. In the survival horror game, players must keep watching over a fictional pizza joint and make sure that the animatronic characters do not reach the office.
The game was praised by critics for its simple gameplay and impressive art direction. But on Reddit, user ClowxReed notes that they don’t understand why the franchise has “5 games under its belt”.
7 Hollow Knight
Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania indie platformer from Team Cherry. The world of Hollow Knight is expansive and full of difficult bosses such as Hornet and Absolute Radiance. The game has managed to win plenty of awards thanks to its eerie atmosphere, striking artwork, and excellent world-building.
Despite having a lot of fans, Hollow Knight wasn’t able to capture the heart of every gamer out there. In fact, Redditor Peripherial notes on a Reddit thread that they didn’t get the game and its world to be “dull” and unimaginative. ”They also add that“ the gameplay just doesn’t do enough ”to keep them interested.
6 Slime Rancher
From the indie game studio Monomo Park, Slime Rancher is a life simulation game that follows Beatrix LeBeau an intergalactic herder who needs to create their own ranch in order to raise, feed, and breed slimes. The slimes produce an item called “plorts”, which can then be sold for in-game currency.
The game was nominated for plenty of awards thanks to its stylistic and distinct art, as well as its relaxing and addictive atmosphere. Unfortunately, the game wasn’t able to please every gamer, as Reddit user stuntaneous confesses that the game is “very shallow” and “wears thin fast”.
Braid is an indie puzzle platformer developed by Number None. In the game, players control the main protagonist named Tim, who is on a mission to save a princess from terrible monsters. Gamers are guided by various text passages that slowly reveal Tim’s motivations.
Critics gave braid high remarks for its unique puzzles and gameplay that allowed players to use time as a weapon. A lot of gamers were also mesmerized by Braid’s impressionist art style. In a Reddit thread, user desolat0r admits that the game’s “difficulty was not tuned well”, and that it was too hard to be fun for them.
A young woman needs to deal with her struggles while making her way up a tall mountain in Celeste. From the brilliant mind of Maddy Thorson, Celeste is an RPG platformer that has fun and exciting platforming segments and challenging puzzle-solving sections.
The game received critical acclaim upon its release as it masterfully weaves together its touching narrative with its dynamic gameplay. But on the website Reddit, ajax54 says that Celeste “doesn’t deserve all that praise” and that the “gameplay didn’t hook” them.
3 Stardew Valley
In the indie game Stardew Valley, the protagonist gets a fresh start by managing a farm handed over to them by their grandfather. Created by solo developer ConcernedApe, Stardew Valley also has a sprawling narrative that involves romancing various NPCs and rebuilding the town’s community center.
Stardew Valley is one of the most charming RPGs out there and critics highlight how the game can help players forget about their worries and just relax on a farm. Reddit user 45intheshade disagrees though, as they note that Stardew Valley is not that relaxing of a game as they “run out of energy way too quickly”.
2 Shovel Knight
A lot of critics would agree that Shovel Knight is one of the greatest side-scroller video games ever made. In the expansive world of Shovel Knightgamers need to wield the Shovel Blade and defeat the evil knights of the Order of No Quarter to rescue the titular protagonist’s partner.
Shovel Knight is beloved by gamers and critics for its easy controls, vibrant graphics, excellent level design, and dynamic combat system. Despite trying their hardest to like the game, Reddit user Kylestache points out that the game “feels very stiff” and is “weird to play on the Switch”.
1 Deep Rock Galactic
Deep Rock Galactic is a first-person shooter indie game where players can choose to play solo or alongside a team of four. Gamers can choose among four playable classes in Deep Rock Galactic, the Driller, the Scout, the Gunner, and The Engineer. The game has plenty of missions with different objectives, such as looting alien eggs, destroying targets, or mining resources.
The indie game has received rave reviews for its exciting cooperative experience, striking graphics, and diverse missions. Redditor filipanton admits though that they don’t understand why Deep Rock Galactic has a lot of positive reviews, since they note that it’s “extremely easy”, has “very boring levels”, and has an “awful RPG system”.
